The Cha-Cha
The Cha-Cha is a lively dance
with quick moves. It was first seen in the dance halls of North America in the
1950's. It was derived from the mambo and has similar elements of rhythm and
character. It is a dance of seduction and playfulness - one of the steps is
called "the Chase". Like other Latin dances there is lots of hip action and
flair throughout the body. Originally called the Cha-Cha-Cha, it is now simply
known as the Cha-Cha. This exciting, syncopated dance has a pattern of side
steps and rock steps. It can be danced to both Latin and contemporary music
(pop, dance hall). It grew out of the Danzon - older Cuban music, and was
adapted in America to incorporate big band instruments such as the trumpet,
trombone and saxophone. It is a dance that some of our beginning students find
somewhat challenging at first but become quite excited about after they get
the pattern. It is an aerobic and fun dance that is quite popular among both
younger and older dancers, singles and couples.
